IN THE COMMUNITY: ASPIRANTES START OFF THE NEW YEAR RIGHT WHERE THEY LEFT OFF

Throughout 2008, ASPIRA’s participants, better known as “Aspirantes” to their peers (Aspirante roughly translates into “those who are aspiring to a goal”), have stayed in touch with their community by involving themselves in various social events and leadership activities. This past holiday season was no exception. While many Aspirantes in December donated their services at the City of Hartford Christmas party handing out gifts, many others kicked off the New Year marching in the 3 Kings Day celebration parade.

In Danbury, Aspirantes collaborated with the Salvation Army taking it upon themselves to pool their money and donate gifts to a needy family identified by the Salvation Army. Many of the Aspirantes not only contributed their personal funds but also shopped for the family, hand picking clothes and a few toys for their children. While they consider their contributions a small token of their commitment to their community, it speaks volumes of the influence the ASPIRA organization has had on its students. With their assistance, the possibility of a happy holiday season came true for this one family. Their collaborative efforts have not only allowed them as Aspirantes to partake in the joyous spirit of giving and community action but also made the day for a few children and their parents who could otherwise not have provided such a delight on Christmas morning.

As in past years, ASPIRA continues to steer its Aspirantes on to the road of success. It has not only helped to motivate and support parents to become more active in their children’s lives but has repeatedly been involved in strengthening and developing the next generation of promising Hispanic/Latino leaders.
